Staff Analysis of the Legislation

SUMMARY: LC 33 6784 "Individual Student Education Account Act" 

Would establish a "savings account" composed of state funds on behalf of an eligible student which may be used for qualifying educational expenses, including tuition, fees, and textbooks at a private school; private tutoring; curriculum materials; contracted services by a public school or district; educational services for students with disabilities; and future postsecondary education expenses.

Would require parents to sign an agreement to provide an education for the student in at least the core subjects at a non-public school and to use the funds only as allowed by law.

Would phase the voucher program in over a three year period beginning with the 2017-18 school year
