Beginning in the 2013-14 school year, each local board must offer instruction in CPR and the use of an automated external defribrillator to students in grades 7-12 as a requirement for graduation.
REQUIREMENTS:
Required training shall include either:
- An instructional program developed by the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association OR
- An instructional program which is nationally recognized and based on current national evidence
Teacher shall not be required to be a certified trainer of CPR or to facilitate, provide, or oversee instruction which does not result in certification in CPR and the use of an automated external defribrillator.
Students do not have to become certified in CPR and use of defribrillator.
If the local board offers courses resulting in certification, the courses must be taught by instructors authorized to conduct one of the approved programs.
