Staff Analysis of the Legislation

SUMMARY:  LC 33 5389  Allows the General Assembly to authorize, by local law, raising the mandatory school age to 17 within a local school system.

POINTS TO CONSIDER:  It appears the proposed legislation would allow local legislative delegations to raise the attendance age within the local system(s) they represent, exclusive of statewide laws to the contrary.  It is uncertain how local systems would pay for the increased student enrollment.

EFFECTIVE DATE:  Upon approval of the General Assembly and Governor.
