Staff Analysis of the Legislation

SUMMARY:

            This bill would amend Part 3 of Article 16 of Chapter 2 of Title 20 of the O.C.G.A. to require public schools to provide parents, etc., of 6th grade female students information concerning infection and immunization against the human papillomavirus.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • On or after October 1, 2010 each public school with 6th graders must provide to parents of 6th grade females information prescribed by the Department of Human Resources concerning the connection between cervical cancer and the virus infection and that an immunization is available.
  • DHR must include:
    • The latest scientific information on the immunization and its effectiveness
    • That a PAP smear is still critical for the detection of precancerous conditions
    • How the virus infection is contracted
    • Statement that questions can be answered by a health care provider.
