Staff Analysis of the Legislation

SUMMARY:  This bill would amend Part 4 of Article 2 of Chapter 2 of Title 21 of the O.C.G.A. to provide the Student Teen Election Participant program.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • LBOE’s and election superintendents may develop and implement a Student Team Election Participant (STEP) program for full-time public, private and home schooled high school students to volunteer to work as poll officers.
  • Eligibility requirements include:
    • US. Citizenship
    • Georgia State Driver’s License or ID card
    • Demonstration of age-appropriate academic ability for the previous school year
    • A history of responsible school and community behavior
  • Students would be under the supervision of a poll officer over 21 years old and would have to have parental permission
  • Students would work a minimum of 4 hours but not more than 6 hours and would receive appropriate training
  • Students would be counted present and given full credit for the day, but for no more than 2 school days.
