Staff Analysis of the Legislation

SUMMARY:  This bill would amend Article 8 of Chapter 6 of the O.C.G.A. to create the Georgia School Bus Safety Task Force.  Its purpose would be to study the safety of school buses and make a report with recommendations.  The membership would consist of 6 members:  2 appointed by the Governor, 2 appointed by the Speaker, and 2 appointed by the Lieutenant Governor to serve without compensation or reimbursement of expenses.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Conduct a comprehensive study of safety designs and technology related to safety and law enforcement;
  • Examine measures taken by other states and their costs;
  • Research and develop recommendations relating to school bus safety; and
  • Review Georgia  laws and make recommendations for needed legislation.
  • They must publish findings and recommendations by November 1, 2011 and would remain in existence thereafter to advocate for school bus safety.
