SUMMARY:  This bill would amend Part 2 of Article 6 of Chapter 2 of Title 20 of the O.C.G.A. to require 40 hours of service learning through volunteer opportunities approved by the LBOE.  The hours would have to be completed outside the school day.  The SBOE would be able to enter into contracts with nonprofits to assist in meeting these requirements and could accept private donations to help implement the requirement.  Extra hour credit would be awarded for volunteering in health, environment, overcoming poverty and education and literacy activities.
