HB 148 exempts from the state sales tax the sale items to be used in the expansion of the Georgia Aquarium. The exemption applies to sales occurring before January 1, 2011. The Senate added a limited exemption for energy used during manufacturing.
The committee substitute received a Do Pass recommendation from the Ways & Means Committee and came to the House Floor under the Structured Rule.

WHAT PROBLEM/OPPORTUNITY DOES THIS LEGISLATION ADDRESS?
HB 148 extends the dates of the sales tax exemption on sales of tangible personal property to, or used in construction or expansion of the Georgia Aquarium through January 1, 2011.
WHAT IS THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND THIS LEGISLATION?
This bill encourages expansion and development of the Georgia Aquarium, which is a large employer in the state as well as a very successful tourist attraction, generating millions in sales tax revenue for local and state government from ticket sales.
