House Bill 209
Chair's Name: Ben Bridges
Committee: Retirement
House Sponsor: Carl Rogers
Chairman Bridges’ Opinion of the legislation:
The bill allows members of ERS to purchase creditable service for prior service as a narcotics agent. The deadline for purchasing service is December 31, 2008, or one year after becoming a member of ERS, whichever date is later. The member must pay the full actuarial cost, therefore the bill has no cost to the retirement system or to the State of Georgia. Current law allows this purchase, but the time frame expired (previous purchase had to be completed by July 1, 1997) – this reopens the window.
