HB 332 gives schools more time to bring their maximum class sized in-line with the State Board of Educations limits.  This bill would change the deadline from the 2007-2008 school year to the 2009-1010 school year.

This bill received a Do Pass recommendation from the Education Committee and comes to the House Floor under the Modified Structured Rule. A Rules Committee amendment will be offered on the House Floor.

Committee Secretary Bentons opinion of this legislation:

WHAT PROBLEM/OPPORTUNITY DOES THIS LEGISLATION ADDRESS?

Since we have not restored all austerity cuts in QBE, it will be difficult for systems to try and reduce class sizes at the high school level next school year

WHAT IS THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND THIS LEGISLATION?

This delay is lowering class sizes will give school systems the time and resources to comply with the law.

THIS LEGISLATION:

  • Delays the lowering of class size at the high school level for two years and also continues system averaging at the high school level
