Staff Analysis of the Legislation

Senate Bill 165

Chair's Name: Tom McCall

Committee: Agriculture & Consumer Affairs

Senate Sponsor: John Bulloch

SB 165 simply codifies, as required by law, the Agriculture Commodity Commissions for Soybeans, Canola, Pecans, Corn, and Vegetables which had previously been created by rule.

This bill received a Do Pass recommendation from the Agriculture & Consumer Affairs Committee and comes to the House Floor under the Open Rule.

Chairman McCalls opinion of this legislation:

WHAT PROBLEM/OPPORTUNITY DOES THIS LEGISLATION ADDRESS?

This bill codifies certain agricultural commodity commissions (soybeans, canola, pecans, corn and vegetables) formerly created by rulemaking of the Georgia Department of Agriculture under the Agricultural Commodity Commission Act.  In doing so, those commodity commissions would become public corporations under this bill. They would be made legal by recognizing them in the statute.
