House Bill 602

Chair's Name: Brooks Coleman

Committee: Education

House Sponsor: Jim Cole

Current law prohibits members of the county board of education to sell the county board any supplies or equipment. This bill would allow these sales in situations where there are fewer than three sources for the supplies or equipment within the county. The Rules Committee approved an amendment (AM 33 0639) which would require these sales to be approved by the board in a public meeting if the sale would be $10,000 or more.

This bill comes to the House Floor under the Modified Structured Rule.

Secretary Benton’s Opinion of this legislation:

If the lone source of materials for school systems is owned by a board member, current law would require the materials be purchased outside the area. This would allow the system to obtain materials from the best source.
