Staff Analysis of the Legislation

Under current law, independent candidates for a county office are required to file their notice of candidacy from the fourth Monday in June until the following Friday and then are required to file their nomination petition between the fourth Monday in June and the second Tuesday in July.  This bill provides an additional time period to file the notice of candidacy, as well as extends the time period to file a nomination petition.

For most years, the additional period to file the notice of candidacy for county elections will be the fourth Monday in April through the following Friday.  For elections in even numbered years following the release of the census (i.e., in 2012), the time period to file the notice of candidacy would be the third Wednesday in June through the following Friday.

The time period for independents to file their nomination petition would begin on the fourth Monday in April through the second Tuesday in July.
