Staff Analysis of the Legislation

This bill requires the arresting law enforcement agency to collect DNA samples on any person arrested for a felony offense within 30 days of determination by a magistrate or grand jury that probable cause exists for the arrest. Samples are then to be sent to the GBI for analysis. Current law authorizes collection of DNA samples for any person convicted of a felony.
