Staff Analysis of the Legislation

This bill was amended to create a pilot program to allow counties to become "certified retirement communities", similar to the certified work ready program. To qualify, the county must be located within 30 miles of a hospital, take steps to gain the support of civic groups, establish a retiree attraction committee that has numerous responsibilities, pay a $2,000 application fee, prepare a marketing and public relations plan, and create a long-term plan to maintain the designation. The program is administered by the Department of Economic Development and a report on the effort is due back to the General Assembly by December 31, 2012.
