Staff Analysis of the Legislation

SUMMARY:

            This bill would amend Part 7 of Article 7 of Chapter 3 of Title 20 of the O.C.G.A. to provide for the PROMISE III teacher’s scholarship, to set up eligibility, to provide for service cancelable requirements; and to provide a maximum amount.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Eligibility for PROMISE III scholarships would include:
    • Legal residency of Georgia;
    • Possession of a bachelor’s degree or higher;
    • Admission into an alternative certification program in GA approved by the PSC;
    • Agreement to teach in a public K-12 school in Georgia for one year for each $1500 scholarship:
    • Teacher’s signature on promissory note to require cash repayment if teacher service is not fulfilled.
  • The maximum amount would be $3,000 per recipient.
  • A student who drops out of the alternative teacher certification program or who is dropped from the program would not be eligible to continue the scholarship.
