Staff Analysis of the Legislation

SUMMARY:  This bill would amend Subpart 2 of Part 2 of Article 16 of Chapter 2 of Title 20 of the O.C.G.A. to provide for reporting disciplinary actions regarding students bringing weapons to school.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • The LBOE would have to file an annual report by August 1 each year with the SBOE regarding disciplinary and placement actions during the previous school year regarding any students who brought weapons to school.
  • The report would have to contain:
    • Number of student subject to disciplinary or placement action;
    • Age and grade level of such students
    • Students’ race and gender
    • Students’ special education status, if applicable
    • Type of weapon involved
    • Type of discipline administered
    • Type of placement action
  • The report would have to be filed separately each school in the system, but it can be part of the student information report required annually.
