SUMMARY: This bill would amend Title 16 to, among other things, allow schools the authority to permit certain persons to possess a weapon under certain conditions and to allow weapons in parks, historical sites or recreational areas (where school children often visit on field trips).
REQUIREMENTTS:
- A person who carries a weapon in a school would be guilty of a misdemeanor.
- Weapons would be allowed for exhibits in a legal proceeding [no mention of disciplinary hearings].
- A licensed person with a gun would be able to notify security or management [school administration] of the presence of the weapon and would have to follow management’s directions as to securing, storing or temporarily surrendering such a weapon.
- Weapons in a locked compartment of a motor vehicle or in a locked container or a locked firearms rack on a motor vehicle in a school’s parking lot would be allowed.
- A School Safety Zone would be limited to the campus itself and the 1,000 foot perimeter currently in the law would be eliminated.
- A person would have to be 21 years old to get a license, and possession of a weapon without a license would be automatic if the license is not on the person at the time the weapon is carried.
