Staff Analysis of the Legislation

SUMMARY:  This bill would amend Article 16 of Chapter 2 of Title 20 of the O.C.G.A. to require a parent conference for students K-12 after receiving a failing grade on 2 consecutive report cards in a subject or course.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • The LBOE may initiate proceedings in juvenile court against parents who fail to comply.
  • The school must first notify by telephone call or certified mail, other return-receipt requested method, or first class mail of the failing grades and request a conference with the principal or teacher or both.
  • If the parent fails to respond, proceedings may be brought by the school against the parents.
