Staff Analysis of the Legislation

SUMMARY:

            This bill would amend Part 2 of Article 2 of Chapter 3 of Title 20 of the O.C.G.A. to allow students who graduate in the top 10% of their class to be admitted automatically to the University System of Georgia membership institutions.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Beginning with students admitted for the 2010-2011 academic year, member systems would have to admit students who:
    • graduated in 1 of the 2 years immediately preceding the academic year of application with a GPA in the top 10% of his/her class;
    • are residents of Georgia and are citizens of the US or an eligible non-citizen;
    • have been a resident of Georgia for at least 2 years immediately preceding July 1 of the year of high school graduation; and
    • received a college preparatory diploma.
  • The application process would have to be followed on schedule and would have to meet all qualifications.
  • Students may have to participate in summer or remedial classes at the discretion of the admitting institution.
  • The BOR and the GSFC would have to adopt a common weighting formula for AP and IB courses for the purpose of determining GPA.
