Donavon Hawk is a product of Butte having attended both Butte High and Montana Tech. ​ He has dedicated over a decade to actively engaging Montanans in public policy affecting their communities and has been a tireless advocate for various causes, making a significant impact on Montana. In 2020, Donavon was appointed to the State Commission of Community Service by Governor Steve Bullock, a testament to his commitment to public service. He has also served on the executive board of the Montana State Democratic Party and on the boards of local non-profit organizations the Butte Community Council and the Butte America Foundation. Donavon's dedication to social justice and political activism dates back to 2008 when he began working with organizations like SEIU, the Montana Organizing Project, he Praxis Project, the Alliance for a Just Society, and the Center for Community Change. His work encompasses a wide range of critical issues, including advocating for health care access for all Montanans, Medicaid expansion, reducing student debt, expanding voting rights, fighting predatory lending, and safeguarding public lands. ​ Notably led a local effort to gather signatures to stop predatory lenders who charged astronomical rates to those living paycheck to paycheck. This initiative resulted in the Legislature capping the percentage charged on title loans, providing much-needed relief to vulnerable individuals across Montana. Donavon is also deeply committed to protecting the rights of hunters and fishers for generations to come, ensuring the sustainability of public lands, defending Social Security, advocating for worker rights, and safeguarding unions. His work extends to supporting quality public education and fostering inclusion and fairness in all his endeavors.
