Representative Sheila Jones was sworn into office on January 10, 2005 to represent portions of
Fulton and Cobb counties in Georgia. She is currently serving on the following committees-
Appropriations, Health and Human Services, Juvenile Justice and Transportation.
Representative Jones is the Vice-chair of the Atlanta Delegation and has served as Vice-chair of
the Rail Subcommittee of the Transportation Committee.
In 2007 Representative Jones authored House Bill 426 which was signed into law by the
Governor in 2008. This legislation relates to the installation of protective devices at railroad
grade crossings and requires local school districts to provide the Department of Transportation
annual information regarding rail crossings without active warning devices that are used by
school buses.
Representative Jones secured funding in the budget for the Harriett G. Darnell Multi-purpose
Senior Facility (Fulton County) and the Vinings Historic Preservation Society (Cobb County).
Representative Jones has worked with veterans, senior citizens, donated book bags to 5th
graders, recognized graduating students and recognized teachers of the year. Representative
Jones has sponsored workshops in her district covering- chronic illness, home repairs, fraud
prevention, texting-sexting & bullying, and health fairs.
Several organizations have recognized the legislative service of Representative Jones over the
past decade, including the Cobb Democratic Women (Woman Legislator of the Year), Georgia
Conservation Voters (Environmental Leadership Award), Georgia Legislative Black Caucus
(Freshman Legislator of the Year), Cobb County Democratic Committee (the Joe Mack Wilson
People's Champion Award), and the Council on Aging.
After 34 years of service she retired from Lockheed Martin Company in January 2014. While
employed with Lockheed, she was an active member of the International Association of
Machinists & Aerospace Workers AFL-CIO Local Lodge 709. In Local 709, she held several
leadership positions including- Shop Steward, Grand Lodge Convention Delegate, Women's
Convention Delegate, and Bylaws Committee Chair. She also served on the legislative
committee and executive board (becoming the first female Trustee for her union). She was later
elected as the Legislative Representative for the Georgia State Council of Machinists &
Aerospace Workers (AFL-CIO). In this role, she represented more than 9,000 working men and
women throughout the state of Georgia and met with both state and national lawmakers to
discuss issues affecting working families, such as raising the minimum wage, unemployment
benefits, and workers compensation.
In addition to the service to her union, Sheila has served on the Board for the American Civil
Liberties Union of Georgia, member of the Disabled American Veterans Commanders Club, 5th
Congressional District Chair for the Democratic Party of Georgia, Delegate to the Democratic
National Convention (three times), National Women's Political Caucus-Ga (member, State
President and Regional Director), and is currently a member of the National Council of Negro
Women, Sierra Club, executive committee member of the Fulton County Democratic Party,
state committee member of Georgia Democratic Party, and a member of Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority, Inc., Atlanta Alumnae Chapter. |
