He was elected to Congress in 2008 after serving in the Louisiana State Legislature from 1996-2008.
Scalise served as House Majority Whip from 2014-2018 and as House Minority Whip from 2019-2022, where he was responsible for unifying the Republican Conference as legislation moved through the House of Representatives.
For the current 118th Congress, Scalise was elected House Majority Leader by his colleagues, the second highest position in House Republican Leadership.
Scalise keeps a pulse on what is happening in communities across the United States and responds accordingly. As Majority Leader, Scalise is responsible for the day-to-day workings of the House of Representatives and helps Republicans communicate their priorities to the American people. From passing the historic Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and the USMCA trade deal-which were both major boosts to our economy-and legislation to keep schools safely open, Scalise is focused on the issues that impact Americans most. He continues to work to secure our southern border and reverse the pro-amnesty policies of the Biden Administration, partner with federal and state law enforcement officers to keep our communities safe, give parents a say in their child's education, take steps to end our reliance on China, and press for investigations into the origins of COVID-19.
Scalise knows the importance of energy development to Louisiana and the need to get back to American energy dominance. He is fighting to enact a national energy strategy that increases the supply of American energy through enhanced production and technological innovation to lower prices at the pump across the country and reduce our dependence on foreign oil.
Scalise is effective at working with Republican and Democrat colleagues to pass legislation critical to Louisiana. A steadfast defender of Louisiana's coast, Scalise led the effort to pass the RESTORE Act, which was signed into law in 2012. The RESTORE Act dedicated the vast majority of Clean Water Act fines from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill to coastal restoration. The legislation is widely regarded as the single most significant action taken to restore Louisiana's coast. Majority Leader Scalise is also a strong supporter of energy revenue sharing and leads the fight in Washington to protect Louisiana's GOMESA funding, ensuring Louisiana has access to hundreds of millions of dollars dedicated to restoring its coast.
Critically wounded at a Congressional baseball practice on June 14, 2017, Scalise was saved by a heroic response from U.S. Capitol Police special agents and Alexandria Police officers. Scalise fought for his life and returned to Congress, inspiring the nation with his resilience and optimism. Throughout his recovery, he was moved by the outpouring of prayers and support he and his family received from the American people.
A native of Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, Scalise graduated from Archbishop Rummel High School and Louisiana State University, where he earned a degree in Computer Science and a minor in Political Science. Scalise and his wife, Jennifer, have two children, Madison and Harrison. |
