Bio

Rep. Tom Kuhn was first elected to the House of Representatives in November 2022. He represents the 57th House District, which is located in Macomb and Oakland counties. The district contains portions of Sterling Heights, Troy, and Madison Heights. Committees Tom serves on the influential House Appropriations committee. He also serves as the Republican vice chair on the Higher Education and Community Colleges Appropriations subcommittee and as a member on the Health and Human Services and General Government Appropriations subcommittees. Education Tom graduated from the University of Michigan with a bachelor's degree in political science. He went on to enroll at the University of Toronto, earning both a master's degree and doctorate in political science. Tom studied law at the Detroit College of Law - now the Michigan State University College of Law. Professional Since graduating from law school, Tom has practiced law for more than 35 years. He served for 12 years on the Royal Oak City Commission and 12 years on the Oakland Community College Board of Trustees, including two years as Board Chair. Most recently, he represented residents of Troy, Rochester Hills, and Auburn Hills as an Oakland County commissioner for four years. Personal Tom lives in Troy with his wife, Sherry. Sherry has a doctorate in education and is a retired educator, having worked over 25 years in Macomb County as a special education teacher. The Kuhns have been married 28 years, and they have three children and four grandchildren. Community involvement In addition to his service in local government, Tom has actively volunteered in his community and neighborhood. For many years, he coached youth sports, and he also served on the board of a youth baseball organization. He was Lakes chair of the Emerald Lakes Village Homeowners Association, while serving on the association board for 10 years.
