State Representative Marvin L. Abney has served the residents of Newport and Middletown in District 73 since being elected in November 2012. In May 2016, he was named Chairman of the House Finance Committee. His committee is responsible for putting together the entire state budget of Rhode Island. He also serves on the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs and Committee on Conduct. He also serves as a member of Rhode Island's Disaster Emergency Funding Board.

Rep. Abney completed Officer Candidate School and Airborne Training. His military career encompassed both US and worldwide assignments. He Commanded a US Detachment at NATO Headquarters, Supreme Allied Powers Europe, Mons, Belgium including duties at the American Embassy in Paris, France. He served as Operations Officer, Protocol Officer, and Acting Deputy Commander at U.S. Army Garrison, Ft. Hamilton, NY. He served as Inspector General, US Army Chaplain School, Ft. Monmouth, NJ. He is a graduate of Army Command and General Staff College, Munich, Germany. He retired in 1994 with the rank of Major.
Personal
Rep Abney is married to Cheryl (Amado) Abney, a retired Middle School Guidance Counselor and School Nurse. They reside in Newport, RI. They have three children, Lee, Christian, and Tess and four granddaughters, Sierra, Jade, Mia and Dakota. Rep. Abney loves to spend his leisure time with a physical challenge. He likes to ski, swim, sail and jog. He is a Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do and he is a four-time finisher of the New York City Marathon. He is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. |
