Bio

As a Columbia native, Todd Rutherford has spent his life as a leader in his community. After graduating from Howard University, Rutherford earned a law degree from the University of South Carolina. He founded the Rutherford Law Firm in 1998, where he continues to represent South Carolinians in criminal suits, as well as in cases of accidents, workers compensation, and medical malpractice. That same year, Rutherford was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives. Since then, he has been a leading voice for Democrats and progressives in our state. Rutherford was one of the first lawmakers to advocate for taking down the Confederate flag from the State House grounds, filing legislation for its removal in 2007, eight years before it was eventually taken down following the massacre at Emanuel AME church. In 2013, Rutherford was elected Minority Leader, a position he still holds today. Whether it's advocating to legalize medical marijuana, protecting women's freedoms, or fighting for criminal justice reform, Rutherford has been a fighter for the people and an advocate for personal freedom in his 20+ years of service at the State House. He lives in Columbia with his wife, Megan, and three sons, Ty, Teagan, and Tripp.
