Charlene Ward Johnson wants to bring her years of leadership experience to District 139. She has been committed to supporting educational opportunities. She believes education leads to better paying jobs that stops the cycle of poverty and the school to prison path. She has been diligent working with organizations to help provide much needed resources for the people in the Houston community. Houston becomes stronger as the communities improve.
Charlene was elected to the Houston Community College Board of Trustees representing District II in 2022. She is the chair of the Academic and Student Affairs Committee. Her committee focuses on the college's student success rate for all students by delivering relevant, high-quality education. She is also a member of the Public Policy & Advocacy Committee on the Association of Community College of Trustees (ACCT), a national organization that brings community colleges together to address real world challenges and help students succeed through advocacy and education. This committee works to create legislative priorities and review public polices issues.
She graduated from the University of Houston in 1991 with her Bachelor of Science degree in Technology. She received her Master of Arts degree in Organizational Management with a Specialization in Public Administration from the University of Arizona Global Campus in May 2021. Charlene's entry into corporate America turned into a 25+ year career in the energy and customer service industry.
Charlene is deeply committed to increasing collaborations with corporate America and the community. It is her belief that in addition to government entities, corporations and industries also have a responsibility to provide tangible services to the community.
Charlene spends a lot of time volunteering for community service activities and events. She serves on several community boards. She serves as Vice President of the Greater Houston Frontiers. She previously served as President of her neighborhood's Civic Club and President of the University of Houston Black Alumni Association. As President of the Black Alumni, Charlene has increased the association's brand awareness, community projects, and student engagement.
She currently serves as a Board Member on the University of Houston Alumni Foundation, where she chairs the Public Affairs Committee.
Charlene is also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. where she serves as Social Justice and Connection Chair. She is the Community Service Chair of the Top Ladies of Distinction-Humble Intercontinental Chapter and serves on the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Volunteer Committee. She is also a lifetime member of the A. Phillip Randolph Institute Houston Chapter.
She understands the positive impact of investing in the community. She volunteers, fundraises and organizes numerous community events designed to enrich the lives of the people in the community. She also actively participates in politics by block walking and volunteering with political campaigns, voter registration drives, candidates' forums, Get Out To Vote rallies etc.
She is a proud Mother of two children. She is a member of Mt Sinai Baptist Church. |
