| Growing up on a farm in Wyoming taught Judy Weeks-Rohner the value of hard work and the satisfaction of completing difficult tasks. After graduation, Judy started a career with Mountain Bell Telephone and Telegraph and was the first woman in Wyoming to become a testboard operator.
In 1983, Judy moved to Utah and quickly fell in love with her neighbors and the many community activities the state has to offer. She values education and became involved in the PTA and was eventually elected to the Granite School Board. Seeing her son and his many friends graduate from Granger High School was a highlight of her volunteerism. Eventually, she earned a marketing position in the Government Education Department at US WEST, which provided many unique opportunities to be involved in political and educational situations as the liaison to the Utah Office of Education and Governor Leavitt's office until she retired in 2002.
Even after retirement, Judy continued volunteering her time to benefit the people around her. She became the Executive Director for ART Works for Kids, a program established by Beverley Taylor Sorenson that instills the Arts into the classroom.
In 2006, Judy's husband passed away and then in 2012, life took another tragic turn when she lost her son as well. Her two grandchildren's education and lives took on a new meaning. Her community activism continued and she started to reevaluate what was happening in our community and state. She witnessed increased homelessness, crime, and other issues around the state.
Christmas 2019's Utah Legislative Special Session brought about a major change in Judy's life that continues today. As one of the sponsors of the Utah 2019 Tax Referendum and through the dedication of citizens state-wide, the legislature was forced to repeal SB2001. During the SB2001 session, Judy spent her days watching the legislative process from the galleries and committee rooms with many concerned Referendum volunteers. The commitment to remove the state portion of the food tax took on new life and she realized that the state tax structure needed to be changed.
When the District Representative resigned, Judy was asked to run for his position and was elected. Now she fights for education reform, less taxes, and a better life for our children and grandchildren. |
