Clemson's Legislative Update --�January 17, 2003

The 115th session of the South Carolina General Assembly opened Tuesday, January 14th.On Wednesday, Mark Sanford was inaugurated as Governor and the other constitutional officers were sworn in during the inaugural ceremony. Those are:

Andre Bauer; Lieutenant Governor,

Charlie Sharpe; Commissioner of Agriculture,

Mark Hammond; Secretary of State,

Henry McMaster; Attorney General,

Richard Eckstrom; Comptroller General,

Grady Patterson; State Treasurer,

Stan Spears; Adjutant General, and

Inez Tenenbaum; Superintendent of Education.

Budget:

Subcommittees of the House Ways and Means Committee began holding state agency budget hearings this week.President Barker will present our E&G budget request before the Higher Education Subcommittee and our PSA budget request before the Economic Development, Environment and Natural Resources Subcommittee on January 29th.

Bills of Interest:

The House and Senate collectively read over 400 prefiled bills and assigned them to committees. Governmental Affairs has reviewed these bills and determined those that may be of interest to Clemson.

FYI:

Representative Mike Easterday resigned from the House to become the Director of Legislative Affairs for Governor Sanford. Former House member, Chip Campsen was named Governor Sanford�s Senior Policy Advisor. Also, former House member, James Law will serve as the Governor�s Liaison for the House and former Senate member John Russell will serve as his Liaison for the Senate.
