Day 37 at the Capitol
3/12/2014

The House Education Committee voted on SB 167 (the Common Core bill) and it got a do not pass 13-5 from the committee.  For those of you who worked on the bill and provided feedback to committee members, you had a great impact.  Thank you for your work. I will advise who voted for the bill in my Friday Notes.

There were no education bills on the floor of either chamber.  There were other bills that passed out of the House education committee:

SB 283Clarify's winter celebrations in schools; Merry Christmas!

SB 372Calculate and provide GPA for HOPE for 9th, 10th and 11th graders.  Not a necessary bill since Student Finance already does this but this is what our legisalture does.  Requires schools to transmit the data to the student's guardians.  It is amazing they are not able to do this on their own by going to the  411 College information website which already has this information.

SB 384 America's Founding Philosophy Principles Act. Urging legislation.

Tomorrow for Day 38 there will be an 8am Senate Education meeting on:

HB897the bill formally known as the Title 20 Clean up bill.  It really is not such a bill.  GSSA has expressed our concerns to the Senate Chair Lindsey Tippins and we are hoping for a positive outcome. Thank you for those of you who have weighed-in on sections 45 and 46.   I will use twitter to let you know.

SR 1201 Braille Instruction in the classroom.
