A Summary of Budget Week from the Capitol
by Joshua Hooper on 1/23/2015

After a week of budget hearings, the state legislators will begin the process of modifying and approving the proposed amended FY15 budget and the proposed FY16 budget. During the appropriation hearings, the joint committee heard that the state economic forecast is good, but growth is slow. The proposed budgets are very supportive of education, with full funding of QBE and additional funding. The proposed budgets reflect an improved economy. Two items that were not funded in the proposed FY16 budget are sparsity grants and the state contribution to insurance for K-12, non-certified workers, working less than 30 hours. The insurance issue will receive a great deal of discussion in the upcoming hearings.  Please make an effort to thank the governor's office and your delegation for their hard work to develop budgets that support education. Also, let them know how the removal of health insurance will affect your school system. Click on the appropriate budget year link to review excerpts from the proposed, amended FY15 or FY16 budgets. These documents should assist you and your budget team as you develop your system's budget. We will continue to monitor this budget process and provide you with timely updates.  To view the entire amended, proposed FY15 and FY16 budgets, click on the following links. The legislators will convene for the fifth day of the session on Monday, January 26, 2015.
