When Wayne Collier noticed that deer were using some of his watermelons as a midnight buffet, he didn’t get angry. He got busy. “I could chase them off, or just plant a few more the next time so everybody had some,” Collier said. “That’s what I did. Besides, if the deer think our melons are good enough to eat, then that’s a pretty good endorsement.” He doesn’t really need their vote, of course. Lots of folks in this part of Cumberland and Harnett counties will take a side trip through Linden during the summer, hoping to spot Collier’s iconic 1966 GMC pickup loaded with locally grown watermelons.
