BioSenator Susan Rubio represents and advocates for over one million residents in the State Legislature. She was elected to the State Senate in 2018 to represent District 22, and was reelected with overwhelming support in 2022. Previously, she served as a public school teacher for 20 years at Baldwin Park and Monrovia school districts, and was an elected official for 13 years in the City of Baldwin Park.
Senator Rubio is the first Latina Chair of the Senate Insurance Committee, and is also a Committee Member of Energy, Utilities, and Communications; Health; Governmental Organization; Joint Committee on Rules; Joint Committee on Arts; and is Chair of the Senate Select Committee on School Climate & Student Safety. In addition, she is a Member of First Partner Jennifer Newsom's Domestic Violence Advisory Council.
Internationally known for groundbreaking domestic violence policy initiatives, Senator Rubio passed legislation that allows the use of coercive control as evidence in family court. As a domestic violence survivor and longtime advocate, she continues to push for changes throughout the court system to lower the barriers for victims seeking protection, including successfully passing legislation that allows victims to use remote technology to testify when obtaining restraining orders.
Rubio has been a leader in housing development in her region. Through her work of creating the innovative San Gabriel Valley Regional Housing Trust, and securing millions in state funding, hundreds of new affordable housing units have been built to house low-income families, seniors and veterans.
Senator Rubio is a Member of the Senate Gun Violence Working Group and Working Group on Survivors of Sexual Assault. She is Chair of the San Gabriel Valley Caucus, and is a Member of the Latino Legislative Caucus, Legislative Jewish Caucus, Legislative Women's Caucus, CA Technology and Innovation Caucus, Environmental Caucus, Inland Empire Caucus, and is a member of the Los Angeles County Delegation.
Born in Juarez, Mexico, Senator Rubio is the proud daughter of a former Bracero farm worker. She attended East Los Angeles College, earned a Bachelor's and a Master's Degree in Education from Azusa Pacific University, and was honored with a Doctorate Degree from the University of La Verne. She lives in Baldwin Park, California.
