BioWhen I was six years old, my family and I moved to Louisville from India. We moved to the United States so that my brother could get the special education he needed at the DePaul School, and I saw firsthand the value of education in our family. My parents built a new life for us from scratch in Louisville, running a small corner grocery store called 8 to 8 in Germantown to put food on the table. It wasn't always easy, but my father always said that no matter how scary or unpredictable things got, when we needed help the most, someone was always there to step up.
I grew up watching my parents continue to give back to our community. My father was a small business owner and became the first Director of Globalization for Metro Louisville. My mother founded a nonprofit serving disadvantaged women, the Beaded Treasures Project, which is now a part of Volunteers of America. My childhood taught me the importance of hard work and giving back. I have taken that experience and spent my life and career standing up for hard working families so that we all have a chance to achieve the American dream.
I am a proud product of our public schools, from Watterson Elementary to Highland Middle to Atherton High School. I earned both my BA in English Literature and my MBA in Entrepreneurship from the University of Louisville. I earned my Juris Doctor degree from the Antioch-UDC Law School in Washington, D.C., which specializes in public interest law. During law school, I had the opportunity to intern at Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and the Government Accountability Project. I also completed over 700 hours of clinical legal work in the community. My education has always been focused on learning how I can best serve my community, and I am proud to be able to use that education to advocate for my constituents and my district as a State Representative.
In 2010, I founded Indus Law Firm, which specializes in immigration and employment law. I am a Member of both the Georgia and Kentucky Bar Associations, as well as the American Immigration Lawyers Association. As an attorney, I have regularly provided trainings, information sessions, and seminars to attorneys and organizations throughout Kentucky, as well as the community at large. I have been recognized for my advocacy work, and believe that our immigration and employment laws must be updated through rational policies that reflect our country's economic goals and ensure a strong and diverse workforce.
I have also served on numerous nonprofit boards, including the Community Foundation of Louisville, Louisville Public Media, the Kentucky Science Center, and Fund for the Arts. In 2013, I founded the New Americans Initiative, dedicated to educating, engaging, and building awareness of immigrants and immigration-related issues in our community.
I live with my partner, Raegan, in the St. Joseph's neighborhood in District 40. I am incredibly proud of our diverse district, which includes iconic Louisville institutions like the University of Louisville, Speed Art Museum, and Churchill Downs.
