BioState Rep. Luke Meerman is a lifelong resident of the 89th House District and was first elected to the Michigan House in November 2018. He represents the people of the townships of Allendale, Blendon, Chester, Polkton, Tallmadge, Wright, and the City of Coopersville in Ottawa County, the townships of Casnovia, Egelston, Fruitport, Moorland, Ravenna, and Sullivan in Muskegon County, as well as part of the township of Tyrone in Kent County.
Committees
Rep. Meerman serves on the House Appropriations subcommittees on School Aid and Michigan Department of Education, Labor and Economic Opportunity, and Health and Human Services.
Professional and Public Affiliations
Rep. Meerman is a small business owner and fifth-generation dairy farmer. He previously served as a Polkton Township trustee, first elected in 2012. Luke is active with the Ottawa County Farm Bureau, serving as a board member from 2007 to 2013 and vice president from 2010 to 2013.
During his second term as state representative, Rep. Meerman served as chairman of the bipartisan School Safety Task Force, working closely with law enforcement, school administrators, mental health professionals and parents to craft legislation to better protect kids from harm while they are at school.
Personal
Luke and his wife Victoria live in Coopersville and have five children. They have led a home foster care program and have fostered 15 children in their home. The Meermans have also hosted six international students in their home, sharing American culture and values with young people from all over the world.
Luke's Christian beliefs shape his philosophy and worldview. He and his family are members of Chapel Pointe in Ottawa County.
As a representative for the people of West Michigan, Luke is guided by faith and the principles of limited government and personal responsibility. He is passionate about reeling in bureaucracy and defending individual liberties.
