Bio

Sears was raised in diverse urban New Orleans by a mother who was a municipal water and sewer employee; she missed out on parenting time with her father who is a traumatized disabled Vietnam veteran. She drew great strength from the examples set by her own mother, friends, and community members who worked tirelessly to lift their children out of hardship. Sears came to Arizona in 1995 seeking opportunity to affordably raise her one year old daughter while pursuing a college education at Arizona State University (ASU). She was immediately impressed by our state's affordability, natural beauty, and unheralded access to democratic government. Sears has spent the last two decades studying and working in legislation. She holds a Masters in Public Administration and is co-author of Arizona's Safe Baby Haven Law. Most recently, she served as a Water & Wastewater Executive Consultant for the Arizona Corporation Commission (AZCC). In this position Sears became an expert in utilities operations and statute, analyzing complex data and testifying as an expert in AZCC hearings on Certificates of Convenience and Necessity (CC&Ns), mainline extension agreements, water and wastewater, telecom, solar, adjudications, and rulemaking procedures. During her tenure, Sears greatly appreciated the opportunity to serve and protect Arizona ratepayers, and left with the ambition to shape public policy herself. She has since intensely developed herself as a servant leader for her community, working with organizations such as the American Lung Association, Mesa School Board, Children's Action Alliance, United Way, State Employees Charitable Campaign, and Fresh Start Women's Foundation.

Sears understands from first-hand experience that the ratepayers AZCC serves are families and small business owners who deserve the opportunity to thrive. She also believes children have a right to breathe clean air and water, and in the potential for renewable energy to create new economic opportunity for working families. Upholding these ideals are Sears' paramount priorities.
