BioState Senator Gail Davenport, a Democrat, was sworn
into the Georgia State Senate in 2007, representing Senate
District 17, which currently includes portions of Clayton
and Henry counties. Sen. Davenport is a member of the Senate
Appropriations, Natural Resources and the Environment,
Retirement and MARTOC Committees. She also serves as
Secretary on the Senate Committee on State Institutions
and Property. Sen. Davenport is a member of the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus, Georgia Legislative Women's Caucus,
Working Families Agenda Caucus, Chairwoman of the Clayton County Senate Delegation, National Black
Caucus of State Legislators, National Organization of Black Elected Legislators, and served as the Chairwoman
of the Clayton County Legislative Delegation for the 2013-2014 term. Sen. Davenport has been a life-long advocate of education. In September 1997, she established the Henry and
Clara Dixon Education Fund in honor of her maternal grandparents. The fund helps students purchase books
while attending college. She also founded COLLEGE BOUND, a residential summer program that exposes high
school students to the college experience and encourages their pursuit of higher education.
Sen. Davenport was a delegate to the 2012 Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Charlotte, NC, pledged to
President Barack Obama, a delegate in the 2008 DNC in Denver, CO, pledged to Senator Barack Obama, a
delegate to the 2004 DNC in Boston, MA, pledged to Senator John Kerry, and the 1988 DNC in Atlanta, pledged
to Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr.

Sen. Davenport is presently a real estate professional with Keller Williams Realty Atlanta Classic, having
worked in the real estate industry for three decades. She has conducted workshops on home ownership and
believes in "democracy in housing." Sen. Davenport believes that every citizen deserves to experience the
American dream of home ownership. She has conducted home foreclosure seminars and worked with
Housing and Urban Development (HUD) certified counselors to assist homeowners in foreclosure prevention. She is a member of Andrews Chapel United Methodist Church in Jonesboro, Georgia, where she serves as a
communion stewardess, member of the United Women of Faith, and Building Committee. She has served as a
member of the Church Development Committee, Nominating Committee of Griffin District and Vice President
of the United Methodist Women, Griffin District.
She is the daughter of the late Mrs. Helen Dixon Davenport and the late Nathaniel Davenport and the sister of Carolyn Davenport.
