Bio

State Representative Karen D. Camper, a Memphis native who has served the 87th District since 2008, achieved historical significance as Tennessee's first African-American woman to lead a caucus in the state's General Assembly. Elected Democratic leader in November 2018, she holds critical positions in committees such as House Finance, Ways and Means, Government Operations, Commerce, Calendar and Rules, Banking and Consumer Affairs, and the House Select Committee on Ethics.

Leader Camper, a retired Chief Warrant Officer with 21 years in the United States Army, boasts a diverse background as a former substitute teacher and music business owner. Engaged in community service, Leader Camper is a former President of the National Organization of Black Elected Legislative Women and the immediate past President of the National Foundation of Women Legislators. She is also a member of the Tennessee Legislative Black Caucus and is active in her church. Additionally, she takes pride in being a devoted mother to her adult son, Bruce Jr.
