BioAs the daughter of working-class immigrants from Bangladesh, Senator Nabilah Islam watched her parents work long
hours and multiple jobs just for the ends to not always
meet. Sen. Islam is proud of her upbringing as it taught her
grit and empathy. These are the qualities that she brings to
the state Senate. Sen. Islam made history with her 2022
election, becoming the youngest woman and first Muslim
woman ever elected to the Georgia state Senate. Sen. Islam represents Georgia State Senate District 7 which encompasses parts of Gwinnett County. Gwinnett is the 4th
most diverse county in America and Sen. Islam is proud to
represent this vibrant and diverse community.
Sen. Islam sits on the Government Oversight Committee,
the Veterans, Military and Homeland Security Committee,
the State Institutions and Properties Committee and the
Science and Technology Committee. Sen. Islam is also the
Vice-Chair of the Gwinnett Senate legislative delegation.
Sen. Islam is a member of Georgia's first ever Asian American and Pacific Islander Caucus and Hispanic Caucus. She is
also a member of the Georgia Black Caucus and Working
Families Caucus.
Sen. Islam is a proud product of Gwinnett County public
schools, graduating from Central Gwinnett High School before earning her business degree from Georgia State University. Prior to running for office, Sen. Islam dedicated her
life and career to advancing progressive ideals in Georgia
through civic engagement at the local, state and national
levels. Sen. Islam's personal experiences have taught her
how to strategically work on issues and have given her valuable lessons on how to work through bi-partisan efforts to
get things done for the people of Georgia.
